Freiburg @ Kulturaggregat 11/17/17 #poetry

Friday night in Freiburg
We choose to dance
In the dark places

We run like we are born to run
Until we run into the wall.
Can’t go over it.
Can’t go around it.
Gotta go through it.

There was a time.
Can you remember?
A time when we were not at war.
Are you brave enough
To remember
When there was no war?

Do you remember A time
When there were No pillows?
We slept on the beach.
Like crabs
We laid our eggs
In the sand.
We flipped and flopped
And tried not to pinch ourselves
With our own claws.

Please forgive me
If my eyes pinch you
Like a crab’s claw.
And my clamshell is
Too tight to open.
Sometimes I will bait my hook
With the smelliest fish
To hook your cheek.
But please know…
You are so much more
Than seafood to me.

Teaching kids how to make sausage
It’s not so pretty
How to marry the meat with the spices.
How to mix the fat with the flesh
How to kill the pig.
How to wash your hands.
To prepare the guts for stuffing.
It’s not so easy.

De temps en temp J’oublie.
And I write the same poem twice.
But the sausage is never the same
Twice.
It’s not a fast process.

When the whole town sees how
The sausage is made
There is no mystery in the meal
There is no fear in the food
The is no worry that the sausage
Knows something
We don’t.

Cookie for your liver
Coffee for your brain
Cigarette for your lungs
And a schnitzel for your heart

In the country
It is the buildings and the cars
That tell us there are people

When the road is closed
We take another road
When that road is closed
We look for another way

If a bird eating a berry
Drops a seed from it’s mouth
And a berry tree grows
Why is it more natural
Than if the man in the bright yellow suit
Plants a tree by the side of the road?

We begin again every day
We finish nothing
Until the flavors of the soup
Are perfect
Or until we are too tired
To taste the difference
